Joe has over 30 years experience in land development and home building. He is a recognized father of traditional neighborhood development (TNDs) and a pioneer of the New Urbanism movement. Joe's name is his promise.
In 1988, this vision came to life through an intense process with a talented team of professionals. The result was the award-winning and nationally recognized Kentlands development in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This 352 acre community is the standard for blending the best of the past with the amenities of today and the future. It is the premier smart-growth model for real estate development and has created a national paradigm shift in the building industry. The Kentlands models the cohesive lifestyle of small American towns from the past by providing the environment that enhances productive and desirable economic and social connections and outlets.
As President of The Kentlands Co, Joe continues to develop and build uniquely creative, market-driven neighborhoods up and down the east coast.
Joe is from Bethesda, Maryland, with a strong history and significant hands-on experience that runs deep. He graduated Cum Laude in Organizational Communication with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Utah. Since the early 1980's, Joe has built and sold over 1000 homes as president of The Joseph Alfandre Homebuilding Company and The Kentlands Co Joe has a clear vision for the future as he continues to create enormous value with authentic quality and meticulous implementation in all of his projects.
The Kentlands Co is headquartered in the charming hamlet of Cabin John, Maryland, just outside our nation's capital. Joe and his wife Sue are the parents of seven children, and reside in Potomac, Maryland.

John oversees all operations for the company with over 25 years experience in project management, construction and land development. John ensures all the details of a project are identified, delegated, executed, and reviewed. He works closely with all teams involved from conceptual stages through final completion and approval. This includes budgeting, contractor coordination, production management, and engineering. John's hands-on experience is invaluable to The Kentlands Co.
John has most recently spent six years with Toll Brothers, Inc. in Ashburn, Virginia as Senior Land Development Manager overseeing all construction and land development operations for the Belmont Country Club. This planned urban development is an expansive project of over 2300 homes and an 18-hole Palmer Golf Course. John fully managed all bidding, contracting, production flow, and bond release processing; and contributed to overall project planning, engineering, budgeting and cashflow.
His previous roles have contributed to A.G. Vanmetre Companies, Inc., in Burke, Virginia, and Howard F. Payne Construction Company, Inc. in Monrovia, Maryland where he developed 93 lots in the Buckingham Hills subdivision in addition to the installation of a package sewage treatment plant and the completion of 45 single-family homes. He also managed projects for Thomas B. Kern in Charlestown, West Virginia, completing 20 single family homes and Marvin Wells & Sons, Inc. in Dickerson, Maryland. John gained his initial project management experience with Joseph Alfandre & Company in Rockville, Maryland as Project Superintendent and Construction Manager for the Cardinal Glen project in Sterling, Virginia; Bridlewood in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Spring Meadow in Silver Spring, Maryland; Saybrooke subdivision in Gaithersburg, Maryland; Woodland Village in Sterling, Virginia; Deepwood Village in Germantown, Maryland; and Hidden Orchard in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
James Alfandre, ASLA
Associate, Planning & Development
James is a fourth-generation developer an heir to a legacy of human-centered development. He firmly believes in creating places where people love to live and has received invaluable design experience through working on planning charrettes across the country. He recognizes the extreme importance of the design process from start to finish, and what it takes to accomplish this.
In addition to his numerous project-related duties, James has been specifically tasked with spearheading an effort by The Kentlands Co to reinvent urban real estate development through crowd-sourcing — very exciting.
James graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture. He is currently working toward a Masters Degree in Real Estate Development at the University of Maryland.
